Marrying the spirit of classic Porsche design with superb modern craftsmanship, Singer Vehicle Design has firmly established itself as the definitive authority in air-cooled 911 enhancement. Rather than simply restoring 964-generation cars, Singer reimagines them as visions of what Porsche’s engineers of the late 20th century might have achieved had they the technological and material advancements of the 21st. Every example is the result of an exhaustive, no-compromise process spanning thousands of hours, encompassing complete restoration, reengineering, and aesthetic reinvention in close collaboration with the commissioning client.

Singer’s landmark Classic Services program, which established the company’s global reputation, progressed from hand-sculpted clay prototypes to the extensive use of carbon fiber bodywork, sophisticated engineering of the air-cooled engine, and exceptional craftsmanship in every detail. Among the standout commissions from this groundbreaking era is the Novato. With a North American-market 1990 Porsche 911 as the foundation, Singer completed the Novato in February 2014 and subsequently delivered it to the commissioning owner in Novato, California—from which the commission draws its name.

In homage to Porsche’s formative years, the Novato wears a specially formulated rendition of Dolphin Grey, a timeless hue recalling the company’s celebrated 356 models. Subtle “ghosted” racing stripes offset by dark green “Porsche” lettering are complemented by nickel-plated bumperettes and badging, while duotone black anodized RSR-style wheels lend the commission a purposeful stance.

Olive Green leather envelops a cabin awash in Singer’s bespoke craftsmanship. Its optional four-way adjustable touring seats, door cards, and dashboard inserts are upholstered in woven Olive Green and La Marinella suede-mix hides, elegantly accented by Alabaster contrast stitching. The classic five-gauge instrument cluster features black faces, cream numerals, and a vivid orange central tachometer offering an evocative tribute to Porsche’s racing heritage. Discreetly integrated modern features, including Apple CarPlay, along with a leather-wrapped roll hoop provide seamless contemporary refinement.

Beneath its sculpted body featuring a carbon fiber roof panel, Novato’s mechanical specification is equally impressive, with a six-speed manual transaxle, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes with Nato Olive-finished calipers, and an Öhlins adjustable suspension system with touring-rated springs, sway bars, and bushings.

Originally completed to 3.8-liter specification, the car was returned to Singer in March 2017 for a factory upgrade to 4.0-liter configuration. This $40,000 enhancement included the installation of a new crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons and rings, and intake plenum, along with ECU recalibration. A $10,000 upgrade to carbon ceramic brake rotors was also undertaken at this time.

In early 2024, the Novato again returned to Singer’s California facility for a comprehensive inspection and sorting totaling over $17,000. This included minor suspension tuning, laser wheel alignment, installing four new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, servicing the air-conditioning system, replacing the belts, and tuning to ensure proper performance on 91-octane fuel. Displaying 7,123 miles at cataloging, the car is offered with Singer service records and factory-issued specification sheets.

With its order book now long closed, opportunities to acquire a Singer Classic commission of this caliber are exceedingly rare. Combining an exquisite specification, 4.0-liter engine upgrade, and provenance directly from the factory, the Novato presents enthusiasts with the chance to own a seminal example of Singer’s industry-defining formative work.
