The 1946 through 1948 Chrysler Town and Country models are notable for being among the few post-war vehicles to have earned the coveted Full Classic title from the Classic Car Club of America. Rare when new and even rarer today, these artfully designed Chryslers with genuine timber bodywork rightly stand alongside the pre-war greats.

Produced in limited numbers from 1941 through 1950 with a hiatus during World War II, these extravagant models were instantly renowned for their exquisite construction using a combination of structural white ash and Honduran mahogany paneling. Exposed finger joinery and complex contours showcased a level of craftsmanship that was becoming increasingly rare in mass-produced automobiles.

Offered in a range of body styles under Chrysler’s New Yorker, Royal, and Windsor lines, the Town and Country shared those models’ respective wheelbases and straight-eight engines. For the 1948 model year, the ash framing remained, but mahogany veneer panels gave way to sheet metal covered in Di-Noc, an adhesive woodgrain material. A considerable amount of hand-finishing went into each Town and Country, which not only accounted for its high price tag, but also its limited production numbers.

This example, built on the New Yorker chassis, is one of 8,368 first-series Town and Country Convertibles produced from 1946 to 1949. As confirmed by its firewall-mounted body tag in the engine bay, the Chrysler is finished in factory-correct Heather Green paint, which pairs beautifully with the tan soft-top, ash wood framing, and darker Di-Noc paneling. The interior color scheme of Green leather and Taupe bedford cord also matches the trim tag and further complements the presentation.

All the amenities typical of the top-line New Yorker series are present, in addition to factory options, including a center bumper guard, Comfort Master heater with dash-mounted controls, push-button radio, exhaust extension, and whitewall tires. A spotlight and chrome wheel covers with trim rings further dress up the exterior.
